We’re super excited to present our first returning post for Featured Friday! Back when Commune was big in San Francisco, we asked artists to submit posters presenting powerful messages about the tobacco industry and living a smoke-free lifestyle. Melanie recently sent us this amazing design based off of her favorite '80s cult film - Gremlins.
Melanie has been an artist for as long as she can remember, exploring different mediums and producing pieces of all kinds.
"I just got back into fine art recently, and decided it was about time to start promoting my work. One medium I've always come back to is oil pastel, but I've experimented with collage art and charaben bento quite a lot as well."
Her pieces are striking and powerful, it's clear that she means to create a message with her work. We love her philosophy on art and the impact she believes it can have. The poster she created for Commune is just another example of how she uses visual expression to evoke an emotional response to important issues.
"I believe art should have a message, even if it is just to be ironic or point out the fallacies of humankind. Art can promote passion and ideas, as well as spur debate about concepts and current events."
Thanks for sharing your passion with us, Melanie!
